Udaan is a Hindi rock band based out of Chennai, attempting to create a fresh and unique blend of eastern and western musical influences. The music is primarily influenced from western rock, with shades of Carnatic and Hindustani vocals. The band has tried to incorporate a variety of genres into their original compositions, in an attempt to create a fresh, heavier and brighter sound. The songs are based on the concepts of free thinking, love, living your dreams, the need to protect our environment and the zest for life. Starting out as a college level band for Madras Christian College, the band was formed in September 2006. A demo was recorded in May 2008, after which Udaan began participating in a host of competitions and college showdowns, most noteworthy of which was the honour of being judged the best band at Saarang ’08 (IIT Madras’ annual cultural extravaganza, also formerly known as Mardi Gras), along with the best original composition (for Tere Liye). To this day, Udaan has been the only band that has participated and won the event by playing only previously unheard of original compositions.Soon after Saarang, the band participated in the regional finals of RC Live (a hunt for India’s best regional band), conducted by Radio City (Bengaluru). Having also qualified for the finals of Channel V's Launchpad, they were unfortunately unable to make it to Mumbai for the reality TV shoot. Since then they have played shows in colleges in and around Chennai, along with live shows for Kerala's Asianet network, namely their offbeat channel, Rosebowl. The band plays original compositions, and their current demo consists of 7 songs along with a few more which have not been recorded as yet. The live set includes jazzed-up versions of popular Bollywood and western covers as well. The band recently re-visited IIT Madras, where they were granted the opportunity to perform on ‘Popular Night’, as the opening act to the hugely successful performance of KK and his band, the headliners of the night.
