British Government Issues Safety Travel Advisory For Women Visitors To India

05-Dec-2019

Safety of Women in India has become a major issue in India now. The crime rates against women in the country have only risen to a great extent. Women think twice before stepping out of their homes, especially at night. This is, unfortunately, the sad reality of our country that lives in constant fear. And as a result of this disgrace, the British Government has recently women safety travel advisory for women citizens visiting India

The government on its website released a detailed information sheet for ‘survivors of rape and sexual assault’ for its citizens traveling or staying in India. The sheet stated that the survivors should claim a police report as soon as possible. As there is a language gap between the Indians and the foreigners the police are not bounded to provide the report in English. But the survivor could get the report translated and explained in English before agreeing and signing to it

Referring to this, Kartikeya Tripathi, a lecturer from University College London (UCL), said that in an unfortunate case, if a British national is sexually assaulted in India, the advisory tells them about their rights and that it needs to be dealt with by a female police officer, which many are not aware of.

Earlier, the US Government’s India travel advisory has placed India at ‘level 2’ security. It advises travelers to ‘exercise increased caution’ everywhere. It also stated that Indian authorities report rape as one of the fastest-growing crimes in India, and violent crime, such as sexual assault, has occurred at tourist sites and in other locations. The advisories have explained everything in detail, and also urge women to be aware of their rights when they are visiting India.

In 2018, Thomson Reuters Foundation has conducted a survey that ranked India as the world's most dangerous country for women, ahead of Afghanistan, Syria and Saudi Arabia. Seeing the circumstances now, the survey looks accurate!
